We came to his house and performed a Home Energy Audit to diagnose the problem. We found that the insulation in his attic just wasn't cutting it. We went ahead and installed 6" of TruSoft cellulose insulation, which brought up the attic's insulation levels to R-49 (the BPI recommended standard for our climate zone). We also treated the attic access hatch with caulk and weather stripping in order to help keep all that conditioned air where it needs to be. During the few cold days that we've had, they didn't even need to use their HVAC system at all. The problem behind their discomfort? The attic! No air sealing and minimal insulation. All of that hot air that had been building up in the attic was leaking out into the living space.
