As experts in our field, when a customer calls in about cold rooms and high utility bills, we already have a couple ideas about what could be going wrong (of course we always do our due diligence and thoroughly inspect the house before diagnosing anything). One of the areas that we pay close attention to is the attic. In this case we noticed a few things that were indicators of an ineffective attic. One such thing was dirty insulation, which told us that air was leaking in and out of the attic.
How did we stop this air leakage? By air sealing the attic and installing blown in cellulose insulation. This creates a thermal barrier, which means that the air that you want to stay in your house actually stays in your house and the air that you don't want in your house stays out. This translates into a more comfortable and affordable house for our client.
This homeowner in Severna Park, Maryland could not understand why her house was so cold. She knew that she had insulation in her attic, and yet she could never seem to retain heat in her house. She had Complete Home Solutions come take a look at her house to figure it out.
We found that her attic did have insulation, but there wasn't enough, it had spots that were too old, and there was no air sealing underneath. We fixed those problems by removing the spots of insulation that were no good, air sealing the attic base, and installing blown-in cellulose insulation. Now this homeowner can enjoy a warm home.
For this customer, we had to explain an important concept. Even if your attic has insulation, that doesn't mean that it's efficient. If you've never had air sealing done, then your insulation alone isn't really stopping any air leakage. As time goes on, and air filters through, that old insulation is going to continue to lose its efficiency. What we did for this homeowner was take out the old insulation, air seal the attic, and install our cellulose insulation. Now, this customer can say that they have a healthier, more comfortable and more energy efficient home.
This homeowner in Riva, Maryland knew that their home was not going to be keeping them warm this winter. They felt like they could never manage to keep everybody warm (often times resorting to piles of blankets and space heaters). They got into contact with Complete Home Solutions to help them with their problem!
After a home energy audit, this is what we told them. During the cold winter months, you do not want an attic like this. What you can see is the old insulation that was already there (that insulation is NOT doing a very good job keeping the home comfortable). What you can't see are the bottom floor boards and rim joists that lack any type of air sealing. We fixed those problems (while installing our cellulose insulation) and gave the homeowner a warm, comfortable home for this winter season!
This customer had a common area in the upstairs portion of her house. She wished she could use it more, but it was so uncomfortable that it made it hard to stay there for too long. Hoping to find a solution for her uncomfortable room, this homeowner looked for someone to come out and diagnose her problem. She heard about Complete Home Solutions and our great reputation from a friend and decided to give us a try.
Our Home Comfort Specialist found the problem when he took a trip up into the attic. He found some insulation that was rather old and had big gray spots (indicating air leakage). He brushed aside the insulation to see what the floor of the attic looked like...it was barren. This would explain why our customer's room was so uncomfortable - there was way too much air flow happening in the attic. With some caulk, spray foam, and blown in cellulose insulation, we were able to fix this attic. Now this homeowner can hang out or entertain all she wants in her upstairs living room!
