Attic Insulation Before & After Photos

Mark D. has a big, beautiful house in Crofton, Maryland. The problem with having a big house, though, is keeping it from getting drafty. He noticed that he was never quite comfortable and his energy bills were higher than they should have been. So, he called Complete Home Solutions.

We performed a home energy audit and found that the attic was the source for many of his problems. Along with the insulation that we provided inside the attic (including installing TruSoft Cellulose and Polyiso foam board) we had to construct an insulation dam around the attic access hatch. That is what you see here. This creates a barrier which allows for the proper level of insulation in the attic. (It may not look like much, but it is crucial in the weatherization process). Thanks to these installations, we were able to make Mark's home more comfortable and save him money in utility bills!

The two things that every attic really needs are air sealing and insulation...and not just any insulation. For instance, the insulation in this "before" picture is definitely NOT what the attic needs...old, dirty, and uneven. An attic like this is bound to be inefficient (which means discomfort in the summer and winter). The homeowner had CHS come out and show them what their attic really needed.

Our crew of experts air sealed the attic up, removed any of the old insulation that was completely ineffective, applied blown in cellulose insulation, and built an insulation dam so that the area would still be accessible to the homeowner when necessary. Now we have an attic that is doing its job - keeping the home comfortable. 

This homeowner had just moved into this beautiful home in Gambrills, Maryland. He loved his new house, but he had already begun to notice how certain rooms would be drafty than others. Before the weather got too cold and problem escelated, he decided to call someone in to diagnose the problem. He remembered hearing about Complete Home Solutions, and so he contacted us to come out and perform a Home Energy Audit.

It didn't take us long to find the problem. We discovered that the attic had no insulation at all. So, we went up there and air sealed all the attic penetrations, installed an attic tent over the attic opening, and installed 14" of TruSoft Cellulose throughout the space. The homeowner noticed the difference in comfort almost immediatly and was grateful that his new house was truly beginning to feel like home.

Ms. Homeowner living in Glen Burnie enjoys having her family over every Sunday after church. Every time her family comes over, they comment about how cold her house always is. After a little while, she finally admitted that they might be right. 

Complete Home Solutions could help her with that. We found out that by making a few adjustments in the attic, we could make a drastic difference. We took out the funky insulation that was in the attic from before, air sealed any leaky spots, and installed our blown in cellulose insulation. Now Ms. Homeowner can have her family over and know that they'll be comfortable in her home!

You can see from the picture on the left that this home's attic had no air sealing whatsoever and fairly limited insulation. How does this translate to the homeowner's comfort? Very hot rooms in the summer time (especially upstairs) and cold rooms in the winter. 

CHS knew that creating a thermal barrier in the attic would correct this problem. Caulking the attic floors and applying blown in cellulose insulation was able to accomplish the job. Now the homeowner is perfectly comfortable in their house!
