This customer had some serious problem with their house...there were air leaks everywhere. Areas like the ones you see in this picture are a huge issue. They allow for massive amounts of air to leak in and out (a huge waste of energy and money). We took care of areas like this with polysio foam board and caulk. These improvements made a huge difference and created a much more comfortable and healthy home!
Cold, unhealthy air typically infiltrates your house from the bottom (whether that be through a crawl space or a basement). In this case, our client was experiencing an extremely cold draft from their basement area. Spots like the one featured in this picture is where a lot of that outdoor air is creeping in from. We were able to fix this area by applying spray foam (which air seals and insulates at the same time). Techniques like this allow us to create a comfortable and healthy home for our clients.
Adam had been experiencing uncomfortable temperatures in his Davidsonville, MD home since moving in several years ago. After talking to a neighbor about the work we did in his home Adam decided to give us a call. Following an inspection from one of our Home Comfort Specialist, it was determined that the insulation level was well below current standards, and no air sealing to speak of, that this was a primary source for air leakage and uncomfortable temperatures throughout the rest of the house. On the day of the job, our Home Comfort technicians began by moving the old insulation to properly air seal the attic, which prevents conditioned air from escaping the living space of your home. We use our fire block foam the seal top plates, recessed lights, drywall seams, and attic hatches to make sure there are no spots for air to escape. The next step was to blow in new cellulose insulation to make sure the attic was properly insulated to 18inches all the way around.
Adam noticed an immediate difference following the upgrades, and can't wait to see the drop in his energy usage, from the improvements made.

This customer had a number of comfort problems with his house (all of which we were able to address). One specific issue that he faced was cold floors. We see this issue a lot, so it was relatively easy for us to diagnose. When you have a "cantilever" (which is this overhang off the side of the house), and it's not insulated, it will leak air and cause your floors to feel cold.
CHS knew the perfect solution for this situation. We air sealed the cavities in the cantilever soffit with closed cell spray foam and polysio foam board. We then putt the BATT insulation over top of the spray foam and closed the soffit back up. The homeowner noticed an immediate difference in his floors!
The attic hatch is a huge space that can let a lot of air escape in and out. If you're experiencing uncomfortable rooms and feel like your wasting money on your heating/cooling bills (like this client was), this could reason behind it. It has to be properly treated to stop air leakage!
CHS treated the hatch by installing an attic tent cover (which is the silver zip-up door you see in the picture on the right). We apply this to the opening and then seal along the sides. This is a great step towards achieving energy efficiency and comfort in the home.
