When we at Complete Home Solutions look at an attic like this, we see some major issues. The biggest one is the lack of air sealing. When we look at the floors and walls we should be seeing some form of air sealing...we don't. We should also see an attic filled with at least 16 inches of good insulation... we don't see that either. Instead, what we see is a home that is wasting its energy and money trying to reach a comfortable temperature. By air sealing and blowing in cellulose insulation, we were able to correct these problems and deliver a comfortable house to a much happier family.
The homeowners of this house in Clinton, Maryland made the right decision in calling Complete Home Solutions to make their home more energy efficient. Additional insulation was added and all the penetrations in the attic air sealed. The home is much more energy efficient and no longer drafty!
We met this homeowner at one of the trade shows that we attend annually. He had a nice long conversation with one of our home comfort specialists about some of their concerns. He suspected that his attic didn't have enough insulation (and his house got really cold in the winter as a result). We told him that we would come out, check out the house, and let him know whether or not his suspicions were true.
It turns out that our client was correct. You can tell just from looking at the picture (on the left) that there clearly is not enough insulation. Being able to see the tops of your floor joists is a tell tale sign of this. The other thing that we found while we were in the attic was that it wasn't air sealed. By making these improvements we were able to create a much more comfortable home for this client (while delivering more affordable electric bills).
This homeowner in Waldorf, MD felt that their home was not performing well and wasn't as energy efficient as possible.
Our home comfort specialist evaluated the home and found that the attic had incorrectly installed batt insulation that was causing air to leak outside the home from the attic. When batt insulation is installed incorrectly, the insulation cannot achieve their rated R-value and this contributed to the homeowners feeling of discomfort and drafts!
Our production crews reinstalled the batt insulation correctly and installed blown-in TruSoft Cellulose Insulation overtop the batt insulation to make the home more airtight and energy efficient!
With the batt insulation installed correctly and new blown-in TruSoft Cellulose Insulation added to the attic, the homeowner is feeling more comfortable and has less drafty rooms and lower electric bills.
This home had a detached garage that connected to the upstairs dwellins. These types of garage attics tend to be unconditioned spaces with improper insulation. The unconditioned spaces are often unsealed so they allow large quantities of air to leak out of the house, meaning all that cold air your A/C Unit is producing is just leaking out of your home. Our Production Crews worked in the attic and air sealed all the top plates and knee walls to stop air from leaking out of the garage attic. Once the area was air sealed our crews blew in Cellulose Insulation to insulate the area to stop air from leaking out of the house from the living areas into the garage!
The attic is now providing a better thermal barrier between conditioned interior space and unconditioned garage and providing a much more comfortable living space for the occupants!
