This home in Waldorf suffered from uncomfortable temperatures in the summer and winter so the homeowner called Complete Home Solutions to find the source of the problem. Our Auditor determined that the source was insufficinet and ineffective insulation in the attic space.
Our Production Team used blown in cellulose insulation to reach the Dr. Energy Saver suggested level to make the home more comfortable and energy efficient.
Attic air sealing and his insulation are critical when it comes to creating an efficient and comfortable home. Without it, you will end up working extra hard to try and heat and cool your house, all while throwing money out the window. Fortunately, Complete Home Solutions is an expert in this field and knows just what to do. For this client, we found the attic to be a major source of air leakage. How do we fix this? We set up a thermal barrier. We do this by applying caulk and spray foam to cracks and openings throughout the attic, installing soffits, and applying enough blown-in cellulose insulation to bring levels up to the BPI recommended standard. This customer now has a comfortable home where she can control how warm or cool she wants it throughout the year.
In the spring ineffective or insufficient attic insulation creates a home that isn't energy efficient. This causes your home to be cold at night and hot during the day because of air leaks in your home allowing outside air in and inside air to escape the home.
To solve this Complete Home Solutions determines the area of the home where the most energy is escaping and seals it to prevent your home from losing energy. Our Auditor determined that the attic space is allowing energy to escape. Our Production Team removed the existing insulation and air sealed the attic space. Then replaced the insulation with Dr. Energy Saver's recommended levels of blow-in cellulose insulation.
Often times, homeowners think that whatever insulation they have in their attic is enough. This would be a bad assumption to make. See how in the picture on the left part of attic floor is exposed? That's a sure sign that you DO NOT have enough insulation.
The recommended amount of insulation for our climate zone would be R-49 (in terms of cellulose insulation that is about 14 in). Before adding any insulation we made sure to air seal the attic floor (to help protect the house from unwanted temperature differences). After making these changes, we now have a comfortable home with affordable bills.
This client had an attic with no air sealing and insufficient insulation. That is a bad combination that can lead to tons of air leakage and discomfort in the home. What can we do to fix this? Well, our crew started by air sealing the attic. This means that we closed up any openings or exposures in the attic floor with caulk and also applied polysio foam board to the attic walls. Now that we've created an airtight barrier, our next step is to install new, durable insulation. We chose to blow in closed-cell cellulose insulation. By making these improvements, we have given our client the control to be comfortable in his home!
