Challenge
This home in Mechanicsville, MD had an unfinished basement that as having serious humidity issues, especially in the summer months. The homeowner would love to use this area for storage, however the humidity throughout the basement makes it hard to have a secure space for his extra items.
Solution
During a visit from one of our trained Home Comfort Specialist, it was determined though the use of several tools, including a thermal camera, that most of the humidity and outside are was entering through the rim joist of the basement wall, which currently had no insulation. Another problem spot in the basement was the older windows which were beginning to leak around the seams.
On the day of the installation, our Home Comfort Technicians began by inserting Silverglo foam board into the windows to create a completely air tight seal. The next step was using our open cell spray foam and spraying it into the rim joist, this foam expands and creates a 2-3in insulated barrier that helps to keep external temperatures and humidity out of this basement. Our final step was hanging a Aprilaire dehumidifier which regulates the humidity to a consistent 50-55% humidity level.
Following these improvement the homeowner noticed an immediate difference in the condition of his basement and can how use the space for storage or any other reason around the house.
