Excessive temperature variations between floors had elevated homeowner complaints in this multifamily townhouse community. Complete Home Solutions was called to diagnose and find solutions to what was causing the uncomfortable conditions.
Our Home Comfort Specialists conducted multiple tests including a blower door test which helps pinpoint areas of air leakage from the outside. The test results confirmed significant leaks coming from the unsealed attic areas, causing significant temperature variations between floors.
Our Home Comfort Specialists recommended three major services that would reduce air leakage and ultimately lower utility bills. These services included air sealing the attic, bringing the insufficient insulation levels up to help reduce the loss of Air Conditioning and sealing the hot air out of any interior and exterior penetrations.
Over a three-day span our production crews properly air sealed the attic areas, caulked all necessary penetrations, and blew-in new cellulose insulation for 23 townhomes! The tenants noticed an immediate temperature difference and can’t wait to see the difference in their utility bills!
If you are suffering from hot and humid rooms in your house and are looking to live more comfortably, do not hesitate to give us a call. We pride ourselves in fixing uncomfortable, unhealthy homes! Robert T. and his wife live in their happy home in Owings, Maryland. Robert decided to call up Complete Home Solutions one day because he realized that his HVAC system was getting old. He wanted us to check how airtight his house was. We were able to come out in April and perform a home energy audit. What we found out ended up making a huge difference.
We recommended that we treat the attic access hatch, caulking framing joints and installing weather stripping around the cover, while insulating the area with 4" of polyiso foam board. With this we would be able to properly air seal the attic. After that, we recommended that Robert install TruSoft Cellulose insulation in order to bring his insulations to R-49 (recommended by BPI standards for our climate zone). We also recommended air ceiling the interior wall and ceiling penetrations, as well as sealing his entire duct system.
After making our recommendations we went ahead and made the proper adjustments throughout the house. After a little bit of time had passed, we wanted to touch base with Robert and see how our services had helped him. We were more than pleased to hear that he was thrilled with what we had done. Not only had his house become more comfortable, but his utility bills had decreased by over 40%!!
Stories like this is what inspires us at Complete Home Solutions to do what we do. Not only do we Fix Uncomfortable Homes, we do everything we can to save our customers money!
Mrs. Homeowner lives in Saint Leonard, Maryland in her Georgian Colonial styled house. This particular homeowner likes to travel with her husband down to South Carolina, especially in the wintertime. Coming back to Maryland weather in the winter is already hard, but it becomes even harder when she can’t sleep because of the cold draft in her bedroom. This year, she decided that she had had enough and wanted a professional to come look at her house and see if they could come up with a solution.
Complete Home Solutions was that professional. We give a very thorough home energy audit to our customers, where we inspect all of the possible causes of discomfort. In this home, we found the attic to be a real problem. For one, this house had a cantilever roof (a roof where one side extends further out than the house), which has its benefits but can cause a lot of air leakage. Inside the attic, we found a lack of air sealing and some really old insulation. We ripped out the old insulation, air sealed any attic penetrations, and blew in our super effective cellulose insulation. Now, although Mrs. Homeowner still likes to travel, she can look forward to coming home and relaxing in her comfortable home.
These homeowners living in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland only just recently purchased their house about a year ago. The previous homeowners had built a new addition onto the house, which seemed like an added bonus when they were first looking to buy. However, this addition was built on top of the crawl space, which had no insulation or air sealing. Needless to say, this new addition was freezing. Luckily the new homeowners stumbled upon Complete Home Solutions and had us come out to see if we could do anything about it.
The crawl was a bit of a tight squeeze, but we managed to get under there enough so that we could properly seal it up. We used our spray foam to seal the crawl ceiling and laid out a vapor barrier across the floor. We also sealed up the exposed window that was letting cold air draft in from the outside. We are happy to announce that these upgrades have created a comfortable living space and a peace of mind for this young couple!
Mrs. H lives in Virginia but likes to get away to her beach house in North Beach, Maryland. She loves the bay breeze and easy going pace, but the house simply gets too hot and muggy in the summer. She feels like she can't really enjoy her time to the fullest when it gets like that. That's why she called up Complete Home Solutions.
We found that her crawl space wasn't very efficient at all. We could fix this by installing a "thermal boundary." This entails installing 3" of closed cell foam insulation in the crawl ceiling. The closed cell spray foam is a great product and will actually air seal and insulate the space at the same time. This upgrade will give Mrs. H the opportunity to enjoy her vacation time and spend it comfortably.
This homeowner and his family do a lot of moving around (mainly because he's in the military and that's just what happens when you're in the military). This time, he's getting moved out of the country (huge change!). Rather than selling the home that they've been living, he decided to put it up as a rental property. Before letting anybody rent it, though, he knew that it needed to get some energy efficiency work done. He hired Complete Home Solutions to come out and figure out how exactly to do that.
The number one improvement that we make that really increases a home's energy efficiency levels is air sealing. No matter what you do, if you don't air seal your house it's just not going to be efficient. How do we do this? In the attic we use a lot of caulk, foam board, and spray foam to seal off any cracks or cavities that allow for air leakage. In the crawl space we installed a 6 mil vapor barrier and spray foamed the existing duct work and crawl walls. After air sealing, we insulated (the next big improvement). In the attic we installed blown in cellulose insulation and in the crawl space we added fiberglass batt insulation to the ceiling.
Along with a few other improvements, these upgrades made a huge difference for this house. It is very efficient now and is ready to take on its first set of renters. As an added bonus, the homeowner got a nice refund from the government for all of his energy efficient upgrades! Thanks to CHS, he has one less thing to worry about as he prepares for his big move!
This homeowner in Sunderland, Maryland contacted us to provide recommendations for insulating their basement. Since the basement was unfinished, our home comfort specialist recommended that the walls and rim joists be insulated with spray foam. Having access to the walls and rim joists before the basement was finished provided our crews with an excellent opportunity to access these open areas resulting in substantial airsealing opportunities. Our crews spray foamed the basement walls with 2" of closed cell spray foam and insulated the rim and band joists with 3" of closed cell spray foam. With a newborn in the family, this homeowner now has a very well insulated basement that will result in a comfortable environment for the entire family.
These homeowners had a little crawl space that was causing a big problem. Their downstairs had been getting unreasonably cold during the winter months. They decided that they needed to get their crawl space insulated before the temperature really started dropping this winter.
A Complete Home Solutions Home Comfort Expert crawled into the crawl space to figure out what exactly could be done to fit these homeowners' needs. The first thing that he noticed was that there was already insulation in the crawl space...but it had been installed upside down. That's one thing we would definitely fix. He also noticed that there was a ripped up, old vapor barrier laying down there. Another definite fix. One other major thing that he noticed was that the walls were bare, allowing cold air to seep into the crawl and up to the living area. We would also definitely have to fix this - we applied spray foam insulation onto the walls and any penetrations.
Now that the weather has finally started to get cold, these homeowners are amazed with the difference in comfort (and cost) since CHS completed their work. Bring on the winter!

Following the spray foaming along with insulation added to the walls, Chase was able to notice a difference in the big temperature difference. Chase had used Complete Home Solution in the past for spray foam work in his unfinished basement. During the spray foam job, Chase was informed about the other services we offer, including our Home Energy Audit, which examines your home and systems for energy inefficiencies. After signing up for the audit, our Home Comfort Specialist recommended improving the condition of the attic insulation in the home which would help keep the conditioned air in the home. On the day of the job, our Home Comfort Technicians began by air sealing any seams, outlets, and recessed lights in the attic using our fire block spray foam; this process keeps any air from leaking out of your living space into the attic of your home. The next step was ensuring that all bath fans are properly vented outside the home through the siding or roof. The final step is blowing in 16 inches of stabilized cellulose insulation to provide a proper barrier between the attic temperatures and your home.

Theresa called Complete Home Solutions when the water in her Davidsonville, MD home was no longer getting hot. Upon examination from one of our trained Home Comfort Specialist, it was a quick solution, she needed a new hot water heater. While replacing it with a standard electric water heater would have been the suggestion of most companies, our Specialist suggested 3 different routes; traditional electric, tankless, and heat pump water heater. Theresa decided on the most energy efficient choice, the heat pump water heater. By using the air in your home to heat the water, rather than electric coils, the heat pump water heater uses substantially less electricity, which in turn saves your money on your monthly electric bill.
Theresa could not be happier with the replacement, and even noticed a drop in her first utility bill since the change.

Kyle used Complete Home Solutions for a couple of projects in 2019, so when his heat pump was on the fritz, he knew that he could once again count on Complete Home Solutions to diagnose and fix the problem. Our HVAC Technicians were able to get out to Kyle's house just a few days later and assess the situation. After examining the system, our Techs presented Kyle with two options to move forward; the first option was to replace a few parts in the heat pump that may buy the system a few more years. The second option was to replace the 19-year-old heat pump. Given the age of the system, Kyle decided that it was a better long term decision to replace the system. On Installation day our crew was able to remove the old unit and install a brand new Amana System.

Timothy was embarking on a home renovation that would take his sunroom with traditional 8 ft ceilings and not much natural light, to a gorgeous space with high vaulted ceilings, which involved removing the separate attic above the original space. During the renovation, Timothy called Complete Home Solutions to talk about the insulation for the new areas to make sure it stays comfortable regardless of the outside temperature. After weighing the options and cost, Timothy decided to have our two-part closed-cell spray foam applied to all the exterior walls before they were finished with drywall. Once the two-part foam is sprayed too a surface it hardens to a solid 2-3 inch insulation that creates a barrier that keeps air from penetrating into a space, as well as keeping conditioned air in. Timothy's new space is now finished and he could not be appier with how comfortable his new sunroom is.

Theresa's home in Lusby, MD. This was causing the insulation in the crawl space to become damp and ineffective, as well it was causing humidity and comfort issues on the first floor of her home. Following a call to Complete Home Solutions, our Home Comfort Specialist recommended a full crawl space encapsulation. The next step was to lay down our CleanSpace vapor barrier which when bolted to the wall of your crawl space keeps moisture, pests, and critters out of your crawl space.
