Insufficient Batt Insulation
This before picture show us exactly where this homeowner is losing efficiency within his home. The batt insulation that is supposed to be hung onto the wall has all seemingly fallen and is exposing the walls. Without insulation on these walls, they will radiate heat into the home causing it to heat up in the summer.
The Skylight Insulation Improperly Installed
Along with the knee walls having missing batt insulation, the skylight insulation is installed backwards and is not protecting the home from the outside temperature. Batt needs to be installed with the fluffy side facing towards the outside air, this way the batt absorbs the heat as it travels towards the home.
Spray Foam Insulation on Knee Wall
Instead of installing batt insulation again, we opt to spray foam the knee walls and skylights. This is due to the fact that two part spray foam expands when installed and seeps into every nook and cranny giving you total encapsulation when sprayed on walls in the attic.
Covers, Air Seal, Baffles and More!
To finish the prep work, we install recessed light covers and stick a flag on top so that once the cellulose is installed, if there is ever a need to do electrical work, you can find your lights easily! We also install baffles to block the soffits and allow the attic to breathe and to prevent moisture issues. Finally, we install measuring sticks to help us install the right amount of insulation.
A Finished Attic
With the insulation installed to the proper R-value, this homeowner should feel a massive difference and their energy bill will show it! Like I stated before, with the cellulose now installed, those flags are clearly visible over the insulation so that anyone who needs to work on them can more easily find them, saving from future headaches. With the insulation blown in, the job is finally finished!
