June is National Safety Month.
Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages — and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. The good news is everyone can get involved to help prevent injuries.
Every June, the National Safety Council celebrates National Safety Month to educate and influence behaviors around the leading causes of preventable injuries and death. Complete Home Solutions is working with community members to help reduce the risk of injuries by offering five safety tips to help employers make the most of National Safety Month and ensure their employees stay safe in the field.
Keep your cool. Take preventative measures when working in the summer heat. Stay hydrated, take regular breaks and wear lightweight clothing. Tents and umbrellas are helpful when protecting workers from the beating sun.
Prevent musculoskeletal disorders. Tools designed to work with the body’s natural movements can minimize the risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders. Consider investing in ergonomic equipment and examining work design to help reduce worker fatigue, increase productivity and avoid injuries and strains.
Hazard communication and identification. Train employees to locate, understand and communicate to others about any hazard that could become present at a job-site. This can include situations where operating machinery, ladders, driving, chemicals, or electricity could be involved.
Prevent slips, trips and falls. According to OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, slips trips and falls are second only to motor vehicles as a cause of fatalities. Train employees to remove obstructions from walkways and exits, keep floors clean and dry. Use warning signs to inform employees, patrons, visitors and guests of slippery floors. Require employees to wear slip-resistant footwear and check frequently that all carpets lay flat to prevent tripping.
These are only just a few examples of how to prevent some injuries from happening. Encourage your employees, friends and family to stay alert and to take precautionary measures when hazards present themselves. This June, we can all play our part by spreading the word about ways to reduce the risk of injuries.
