The Importance of Carbon Monoxide and Smoke detectors
Keeping your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors functioning can be the difference between life and death in your home. These detectors save lives by monitoring your home’s air and communicates when something is potentially harmful to the people in the house. Given the importance these detectors have, there are certain things you need to do to ensure they are functioning correctly.
If your detectors are turning yellow, it is most likely time to get a fresh one to ensure your home is safe and prepared for an emergency at every moment. This often means the alarm has been there for an extended period and has probably never been replaced, it might not even function.
A couple simple things to do to keep your detectors working effectively:
- MAKE SURE THE BATTERIES WORK! According to the National Fire Protection Association dead batteries account for 25% of alarm failures
- If battery operated, make sure to replace the batteries every 6-8 months
- While you are replacing the batteries make sure to clear any dust or debris that is present in the battery compartment
- These systems have a lifespan of 7-10 years After they have reached their lifespan, you are going to want to update to new detectors
- Ensure that you have a detector on every floor of your home and one outside of every bedroom
