What Makes The World Go Round?
How do you impact the world? Do your actions even matter? Many times, we defer these questions to the solitary fact that each of us is just one in 6 billion. A single person can’t do much. Right?
Well, today is “America Recycles Day” and it is here with a different answer. You’ve probably already guessed what I’m going to say. The idea is predictable and a bit clichéd, but it still holds true. I think it can be best explained by former Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” You may not think that you have an impact, but you and thousands of other people…now that’s a different story.
So now you know you make a difference (if you didn’t already have that part figured out before). Your next question might be “what kind of a difference?” I’ve scooped up a few fun facts from www.timetorecycle.org to help inspire a little extra enthusiasm.
A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling one 1 pound of steel. In one year in the Untied States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes.
Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution.
The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.
These are just a few of the possible benefits that come from making the decision to recycle. If that’s not enough to turn you, visit the website, figure out what speaks to you. Chances are there is something that will make that click in your head, “Yeah, I could really get into this.”
We at Complete Home Solutions have long found that click. This is the kind of stuff that we live for. We know that for every home we help that we’re contributing to something so much bigger. We’re creating a standard of living that is greener, healthier, and safer.
